ON THE MARCH
It is important to source or create clothing and equipment which looks right and that is made from the correct materials. For military impressions it is equally important to find out if this kit can stand the rigours of a march. Some members of Earlyworks have taken their military kit out onto the moors of North Yorkshire, the rocky headland of Flamborough and up onto the line of Hadrian's Wall. This is a way to discover what it was really like to carry the armour, weaponry and kit over long distances (two of our members walked 13 miles along Hadrian's Wall in a day!). What works, what doesn't? Where do you stow your cloak? What do you drink? What rations should you carry? How do you wear your shield? What breaks first...your boots, your shield strap ...or your spirit?! Over the craggy footpaths of Hadrian's Wall, 20kg (40 lb) of ringmail armour can really get you down.
