2006-2012 SCHOOL VISTIS
From time to time some of us are able to visit schools to pass on what we know about Roman or Iron Age history. Paul/Fortunatus works in a school and for the past six years has been part of a three-day Roman workshop; afternoon 1 features the kit and life of a Roman soldier, afternoon 2 is a full drill session on the playground with 60 children carrying Roman shields they have made themselves. The children seem to enjoy be shouted and screamed at by a centurion! It is quite a thrill drilling 60 children , that's getting on for a century (80 men)! Day 3 is an all day affair, Paul assists a member of staff with cooking Roman dishes with the children. In the afternoon they dress up in Roman clothes and enjoy a banquet where they taste the food they made as well as wolf down crusty bread, grapes and fruit juice. They entertain each other with jokes, music, sketches or gymnastics routines while the diners recline on mats in the school hall!
