2012 CAWTHORN CAMPS
Cawthorn, in North Yorkshire is the site of at least one Roman fort and several temporary marching camps, used by soldiers periodically for training. They still evoke a strong sense of wilderness, and frontier living, sited as they are on the edge of a wooded escarpment. |
We visited the camps kitted out in a variety of Roman periods. Gary as 1st century Roman, Paul as 2nd century Roman, and John Bee and Alex kitted out as soldiers of the 4th century. Alex wore the ringmail coif, the headpiece invented during the Roman period that proved so popular during the later Medieval times.
We took photos, ate rations and toured the site. The weather was kind!
